One business website design factor that can make your prospects run away screaming

.

What if you could change just one element of your website’s design that could improve the time your visitors spent on your site by 30-40 percent?

Would you be interested?

I thought so.

As I was writing a web critique for a client this weekend, there was one thing about their site that really disturbed me.

And it had nothing to do with the lack of web copy or page headlines or anything like that.

Instead it was related to the design aspect (of which I’m certainly not an expert on). And since I was looking at it from a “possible client” point of view, I can have an opinion.

I just didn’t like the colors that were used. They just didn’t fit in with the specific service that was offered or the prospect’s reason for being there. In short – it was cold and negative.

Now I’m not going to get into a war of words with designers (The good designers I know will agree with me because they do the necessary research), but when you or your designer, or whoever does your site comes up with a layout and color scheme for your website…

Please make sure it will be warm and inviting so the person looking at it will want to check it out in more detail – don’t make it look so cold, negative, and impersonal that they turn and run as fast as they can.

To do that though, they’ll need to learn about the products and services being offered, and the personalities of the people going to the site.

For example: if you’re site is selling heavy metal rock songs to kids, maybe the black and dark color schemes would be okay. But…if your website is trying to get 45 year old women to sign up for your local garden club, you may want to consider using bright and happy colors.

Bottom line — colors (and pictures, too) should be used to make your prospects feel at home, feel positive, and give ‘em that trusting, warm and fuzzy feeling they are looking for.

Depending on your services or products AND your ideal prospect’s wants, it might just be a matter of using the right color, or a brighter, cheerier color scheme.

Common sense approach to web usability

.

Do you know what your website’s visitors think about your site’s usability?

Things such as “how easy it is to navigate” and “could they quickly find the information they were looking for”.

If you don’t know, or think that just because you like it and think it’s okay, then you should pick up a copy of “Don’t Make Me Think” written by Steve Krug.

I just finished reading it, and I gotta tell you – there’s some good stuff in almost 200 pages about how others view your website and how important it is to keep your site as simple as possible, while getting the job done.

It’s amazing how I look at every website after reading this, and unfortunately, there are more sites that need work, mostly because they were designed  by a designer, not a strategist.

In it are many examples of poor and good websites, and Steve discusses all the pros and cons of each, using non-technical words.

From basic design, to layout, to copy, to how users use the Internet… He talks about it all in great detail.

And he does it in a way that is conversational enough to keep you interested till the end.

So if you want to get some eye-opening questions about your website answered, get to Amazon and pick up a copy today.

Personally, I thin any business professional that has a website should read this book.

Writing your business blog – from a New Hampshire point of view

.

If you’re a NH business professional and have a business blog, today you’ll get a fresh perspective about what you should blog about from an experienced Portsmouth, NH media consultant.

Today’s post is reprinted with permission from Grace Duke, founder of Saving Grace Media. Grace is an advertising expert, specializing in helping businesses with their media planning and buying options.

So without further delay… compliments of Grace Duke…

I love helping small businesses set up their social media programs.  Recently, I worked with two completely different types of companies, and while their individual markets are totally unrelated, their approach to marketing themselves through social media is similar.

Facebook, twitter and the like are good tools, but the real value is in the blog.  Through your businesses blog you can communicating directly to your many audiences — customers or clients, prospective customers, past customers, aquaintances, employees and yes even competitors!  This communication should be ongoing, honest and open to feedback.

There are hundreds of books and thousands of on-line posts on how to write a blog, but it all boils down to a few key factors, the most important of which is to honestly give of yourself.  Your blog is all about providing information for your readers.  Your blog is not the place to sell your company, quite the contrary!  It is for giving your readers helpful hints, advise, or otherwise sharing your knowledge about your business and interests.

So think about your audiences, what information do you have that would interest them?  Are you an Executive Coach?  Then infomation about management techniques, or trends in business would be of interest to your audience.  Are you a Cosmetologist?  Then your audience might be interested in skin care tips or news about the dangerous chemicals in everyday health and beauty products.  A restaurant owner?  How about nutrition tips, interesting recipies, or even have some of your staff write short pieces on activities they enjoy outside of work.  The ideas are endless if you approach your blog from the point of view of your readers.

What are your thoughts?

Get better results from your NH website when you talk about your visitors, instead of you

.

Here’s a quick tip about writing better web copy.

If you want your web copy to engage and convince your visitors to take a specific action, then talk to them using the appropriate tone for your audience.

Your content will work much better at converting if you talk to them, not by talking about yourself and how great you and your company are.

Try to minimize the use of the words I, me, we, us, and ours

Instead, use more of the words you can, you will, yours, and you’re. It shows you’re (see – I used it right there) focusing on them and their problems.

Engaging your online prospects – automatically

.

It seems to me that many consumers prefer to learn more about a company, product, or service on their own, without talking to a person, before they decide on their next move.

I’m certainly one of them, and maybe you are, too. My goal is to get as much information as possible about something before I talk with a consultant or salesperson.

And the easiest way to do that?

By getting the information from various websites.

So make sure your website and web copy provides enough good information that your target market is looking for.

The hardest part is striking a balance of enough information – but not so much information that your visitor will never contact you for more help.

That’s where good site navigation and web copy for each page is important. Provide enough information so your visitors know that you understand the reason they’re on your site to begin with, and you’ll have a much better chance of them contacting you for further help.

And a good web copywriter that can write page content persuading your visitors to contact you is worth their weight in gold.
